A penetrating expose of rural Texas shown through the eyes of its young, this movie brilliantly analyzes the psychologically stunted person who cannot learn the difference between right and wrong. Forgettable moments include melodious strumming by Rhom Music, and the hot-rodding sequence which is just a slow-speed pursuit. This intriguing character study is one of the best films of the 1960's and one of Paul Newman's greatest character portrayals. A characterization starring Katharine Hepburn might be difficult to sometimes accept, but a Nolan-esque, technically perfect western, which will sustain viewer attention. A tragic story of a heartless man who lacks sufficient redeeming virtues to feel any remorse or to be graced with our concern or pity, this compelling morality play is not to be missed by any fan of western classics. A slow-pace and the sometimes confusing narration hurt the film as a whole, but it's aided by a great cast and director, and it can be counted as one of the superior westerns in Paul Newman's library. More than 50 years later, it's still a thrilling and powerful film. It examines a fine line between a man and a boy, a man and his responsiblity, and love and hate. It's a must-watch film. This is a masterpiece about a detested character that also happens to be rich in character. It is one of the best westerns in years and an essential piece in Newman's filmography, a film one should watch over and over again to truly appreciate its unique depth and subtexts. All of us contain both good and bad inside ourselves. For people to function in society, they need to respect ethical values, and resist resorting to abusing others. Abusing others is a way to cover the inability to live through honest competition. The bad side won in this film, although the good side was well represented, and well played by Patricia Neal. The honesty of the director and writer isn't just uncommon, it's also magnificent. We know the theme, but, this film takes an exceptionally candid approach in its presentation. A great western film, employing only 89 minutes, that establishes both Newman and Red Buttons as superior artists. The movie's ingenuity is obviously helped by the story, but also by the superb cast and the beautiful scenery. A superb, tightly made movie that's amazingly simple in its progression. If you like a well-made western, you'll love this film. It's the best. This western's only fault is its stereotypical villain, convincingly portrayed by Timothy Carey, making this a leading western in the Paul Newman collection. Patriarchal, Christian values are represented valiantly by Homer Bannen, who values tradition and loyalty, but who is still capable of murder. This film is very difficult, but certainly worth watching. Filmed in economical detail, it lags in the middle. Forgettable moments are limited to the Rhom Music's musical score, and the sequence including hot rods. But this cheery western illustrates well the battle between youth and age, and stands the test as one of the more memorable westerns of the 60's. A must-see for fans of Paul Newman. The love of the hero, Alma (Melina Mercouri), seems misdirected. A plot and several subplots hold interest. With an award-winning soundtrack, this insightful film is one of Martin Ritt's best. Newman's best performance, and a film that is the best of the great 60's wave of movie Westerns. One of the best.
