Liliom

Liliom is a 1934 American drama film directed by Fritz Lang and starring Charles Boyer and Madeleine Ozeray. It is based on the 1909 play of the same name by Hungarian playwright Ferenc Molnar. The film tells the story of Liliom (Boyer), a carousel barker who falls in love with Julie (Ozeray), a young working-class woman. After they have a child, Liliom's gambling addiction and inability to hold a job cause him to become increasingly frustrated and abusive. He eventually commits suicide, and after 16years in Purgatory he returns to Earth to see how his family has fared. Charles Boyer gives an excellent performance in the title role, and Madeleine Ozeray is also very good as Julie. The film's cinematography is stunning, and Fritz Lang's direction is masterful. Liliom is a powerful and moving story about love, loss, and redemption.
