Toofan is a film that defies categorization, moving seamlessly between horror, comedy, documentary, musical and science fiction. It tells the interconnected stories of a madman, a homeless woman, a print shop worker, and a playboy in the days leading up to Persian New Year. Directed by Samuel Khachikian, it was the first production of his studio Azhir Film. Khachikian's original plan was to make a film about the first serial killer of the modern era in Iran, but when the censors banned it, he turned to one of his own stories, exploring the themes of compassion and evil. The film features memorable sequences, including a scene set during Bonfire Wednesday and a visit to a ruined dungeon rumored to have been used as a torture chamber during the Qajar era. Toofan is a captivating and unique film that showcases Khachikian's distinctive style and vision.
